This sweet mix of unconditional love, indelible dark circles and existential crises in front of a stain of mashed potatoes that you could swear was alive. Add to that a married life to maintain and a sexuality to keep alive, and you get the greatest challenge worthy of a circus act: juggling parental responsibilities without giving up passion (or the baby).

Before: hot sex, after: “honey, have you thought about diapers?”

Remember those distant days when your evenings ended in fireworks under the duvet. Today, the only fire you light is the one in the microwave to warm a bottle. Spontaneity has given way to logistics:

Before : “Shall we have a little romantic weekend?”

After : “Shall we take a nap while the little one sleeps?”

And if you still have some energy after 12 hours of intense parenting, there is still a major obstacle: the child’s radar ear. You thought you were discreet? No. This child has developed a sixth sense to interrupt any intimate moment with perfect synchronization.

Emotional balance: the secret weapon (or almost)

If you’re waiting for Cupid to spontaneously fix the situation, know that he’s probably stuck under a pile of plastic toys. The key to maintaining desire is emotional management in the face of unfulfilled desires. Real discussions about your wants, your needs and your frustrations by having an attitude of partnership rather than adversary.

This can include the art of adjustment :

Him : “How about we try this sexy thing I saw on the internet?”

Her : “If it takes less than 10 minutes and it doesn’t make any noise, OK.”

Couples’ dates… not just parental committees during dinner

Romanticism, after having children, is knowing how to appreciate small victories :

A quick physical closeness in the corridor

A naughty little look demonstrating our desire to our loved one

A little paving for the other when getting out of the shower

So, instead of waiting for the perfect evening (which will never come), enjoy the little moments : a knowing wink, a hug in the hallway, or a giggle while changing an atomic layer. That’s the new romanticism.

Conclusion: Accept chaos and adapt

In truth, parenthood transforms married life and sexuality, but it does not condemn them. All you have to do is adjust your expectations, accept that perfection doesn’t exist, and laugh at the unexpected (because there will be some). The important thing is to keep this connection… even if it means planning a steamy night between two appointments with the pediatrician.

And if it’s ever too complicated, remember: grandparents are also used to look after the children!

Montreal Sexologists and Psychotherapists Clinic

François Renaud M.A.

Sexologist and psychotherapist

Specialized in couples therapy

Photo by Catalina Carvajal Herrera from Pexels: https://www.pexels.com/photo/portrait-of-loving-family-14682961/ Parenthood, couple and sexuality: the great balancing act Ah, parenthood!
